During the exam, you will lie comfortably on an examination table. Our vascular specialist applies a warm gel to your skin and moves a small hand-held device called a transducer along the main deep vein pathways of your leg, starting at your groin and moving down to your ankle.
The specialist performs a series of gentle pressure maneuvers, pushing the transducer firmly into your skin every few inches. In a healthy leg, deep veins are thin-walled and highly flexible, meaning they will easily collapse completely flat under mild pressure. If a deep vein clot is present, the vein will remain rigid, stiff, and refuse to compress under the transducer. The computer then uses color-coding to visualize the obstruction, showing exactly how much blood flow is blocked by the clot.
