Reticular Veins
Reticular veins, also known as “feeder veins,” are dilated bluish or greenish veins that sit slightly deeper beneath the skin’s surface than spider veins. While they are smaller than thick, bulging varicose veins—usually measuring between 1 and 3 millimeters in diameter—they are often interconnected. In fact, reticular veins frequently act as the high-pressure source that feeds into superficial spider veins. While many consider them a cosmetic nuisance, they can be a sign of underlying venous pressure and can cause localized discomfort.

For many individuals, reticular veins present primarily as a cosmetic concern due to their prominent blue or green appearance on the thighs, back of the knees, or ankles. However, they can also cause physical symptoms, including:
Localized Aching: A dull, persistent ache directly surrounding the area of the visible veins.
Burning or Itching: A bothersome itching or warm sensation in the skin over the affected veins.
Tenderness: The area immediately over the reticular vein may feel tender or sensitive to the touch.
Associated Spider Veins: The presence of tight clusters of red or purple spider veins nearby, which are being fed by the underlying reticular vein.
The primary cause of reticular veins is a mild to moderate form of chronic venous insufficiency. Inside healthy veins, tiny one-way valves keep blood flowing upward toward the heart. When these valves stretch or become slightly weakened, blood is allowed to pool. This backward pressure expands the vein walls, making them permanently visible through the skin as blue or green lines.

Genetics: A strong family history of spider veins, reticular veins, or varicose veins is the leading risk factor.
Prolonged Sitting or Standing: Occupations or habits that involve long periods without movement hinder healthy leg circulation.
Hormonal Fluctuations: Changes in estrogen and progesterone (during pregnancy, menopause, or from birth control pills) can naturally relax vein walls.
Gender and Age: Women are statistically more likely to develop reticular veins, and the risk increases as vein elasticity naturally declines with age.
Treating reticular veins is highly recommended because shutting them down removes the source of pressure feeding smaller spider veins, preventing future recurrence. We offer highly effective, minimally invasive treatments right in our office.
Sclerotherapy
What it is: A specialized, microscopic needle is used to inject a gentle medical solution directly into the reticular vein.
How it helps: The solution causes the irritated walls of the feeder vein to safely close together. Your body naturally reroutes blood flow to deeper, healthy veins, and the closed vein safely dissolves over time.
Laser Vein Therapy
What it is: Focused light energy is directed through the skin’s surface to target the pigments in the blood vessel.
How it helps: The heat from the laser seals the vein shut without damaging the surrounding skin tissue. This is often used as a complementary treatment for smaller or hard-to-reach branching vessels.
Conservative Management
What it is: Tailored lifestyle habits designed to support your overall vascular wellness.
How it helps: Utilizing mild compression stockings, elevating your legs after long days, and engaging in calf-strengthening exercises help prevent new reticular veins from forming.

In many cases, reticular veins can gradually become more noticeable over time, especially if the underlying circulation issue is not addressed. While they may start as small bluish veins beneath the skin, they can expand or contribute to the development of spider veins.
Reticular veins are more common in adults, particularly those with a family history of vein disease. Long periods of standing or sitting, hormonal changes, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations may contribute to developing them.
No. Reticular veins are slightly larger and typically appear as bluish or greenish veins beneath the skin. Spider veins are smaller, red or purple surface veins that often branch out in a web-like pattern.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during treatment. Procedures such as sclerotherapy involve very small injections and are generally well tolerated. Patients often describe the sensation as a mild pinch or slight burning that quickly subsides.
The number of treatments is based on the size, amount, and location of the veins being treated. Some patients see improvement after one session, while others may benefit from multiple treatments to achieve the desired results.
Results usually develop gradually. Treated veins often begin to fade within a few weeks, though it may take several weeks or months for the body to absorb them fully.
Most reticular vein treatments require little to no downtime. Patients are usually encouraged to walk and can return to normal daily activities shortly afterward, though strenuous exercise should be limited for a short period.
Treated veins typically do not return once they have been successfully closed. However, new reticular veins can develop over time, especially if underlying vein conditions or lifestyle factors remain present.
In many cases, treated reticular veins fade significantly or disappear entirely. Improvement can vary depending on vein size and the treatment method used.
