Venous Ultrasound
A venous ultrasound—also known as a venous Doppler study—is a safe, painless, and completely non-invasive diagnostic tool used to visualize the inside of your blood vessels. It uses high-frequency sound waves to monitor how blood flows through your limbs and to check for hidden circulatory issues. At the Vein & Wound Center of LA, a detailed vascular ultrasound is the essential first step we take to pinpoint the exact root cause of your leg discomfort, map your anatomy, and design a highly precise, successful treatment plan.

BEFORE

AFTER
Because many advanced circulatory issues develop deep beneath the skin surface where they cannot be physically seen, an ultrasound is routinely recommended if you experience any of the following progressive symptoms:
Persistent Swelling: Puffiness or fluid retention in the ankles, feet, or calves that typically worsens by the end of the day.
Unexplained Leg Pain: Deep muscle aching, throbbing, or severe nighttime cramping (Charley horses) that disrupts your sleep.
Chronic Leg Fatigue: A persistent sensation of heaviness or sluggishness in your lower limbs that improves when you elevate your legs.
Visible Vascular Changes: The presence of bulging, twisted varicose veins, dense clusters of spider veins, or dark brown patches of skin discoloration.
Sudden, One-Sided Changes: Rapid swelling, severe tenderness, or localized warmth in just one leg, which are primary warning signs of a dangerous blood clot.
While a physical exam shows the outer condition of your skin, a venous ultrasound allows our specialists to look directly inside your vascular system in real time. It is primarily used to evaluate two major conditions:
1. Venous Reflux (Chronic Venous Insufficiency)
Healthy leg veins contain tiny, one-way internal valves that work against gravity to keep blood flowing upward toward your heart. If these valves stretch, weaken, or become structurally damaged, they fail to close properly. This allows blood to travel backward and pool heavily in your lower legs. An ultrasound allows us to see exactly which valves are leaking and measure the backward flow of blood.
2. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
A DVT is a medical emergency where an abnormal blood clot forms inside the deep, large veins of the leg. If left undiagnosed, the clot can break loose and travel to the lungs, causing a life-threatening blockage (pulmonary embolism). A venous ultrasound is the gold-standard method to instantly locate a clot, measure its size, and track how well it is dissolving during treatment.

A venous ultrasound is a completely stress-free, comfortable procedure performed right inside our LA office by a specialized vascular sonographer.
The Procedure: You will rest comfortably on an exam table or stand on a specialized step stool. A small amount of warm, water-soluble gel is applied to your leg, and a smooth handheld wand (transducer) is guided gently over your skin.
The Sensation: The test is completely painless. You will feel only the light pressure of the wand moving over your leg. You may occasionally hear a rushing pulse sound from the ultrasound machine, which is simply the audio representation of your blood flowing.
No Downtime: The entire diagnostic scan takes between 30 to 45 minutes per leg. There are absolutely no needles, radiation, or sedatives involved, meaning you can walk right out and resume your daily routine immediately.
